The Power of Effective Reading Instruction with Karen Gazith

Welcome to our National Literacy Month series of podcasts, presented in partnership between the Be Podcast Network and Reading Is Fundamental. The month of September may be done, but we’re continuing the series with more conversations this fall.

Today, Karen Gazith joins the show. Karen received her PhD in Education and Counselling Psychology from McGill University and has taught at McGill for over two decades. She also serves as the Graduate Program Director of the Certificate in Inclusive Education in the same department and as a liaison to the Office of First Nations and Inuit Education in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education at McGill.

Karen’s book is The Power of Effective Reading Instruction: How Neuroscience Informs Instruction Across All Grades and Disciplines.

We discuss:
  • Teaching students to read is the most essential duty of schools
  • Reading is everyone’s business
  • What should change in pre-service and inservice learning?
  • What neuroscience research says about how children learn to read
  • The Big 5: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension
  • Reading instruction across content areas

Learn more about today's sponsor, Playworks:

We’re proud to be sponsored by Playworks, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with evidence-based practices that help schools improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play.

If you’re a school or district leader struggling with the challenge of chronic absenteeism, as so many are across the U.S., you may not realize that structured recess is a research-backed approach to keep kids in school. In fact, a UC Berkeley study of Title I schools found that those partnering with Playworks had significantly lower chronic absenteeism rates. Further, Mathematica research demonstrated that Playworks schools spent 27% less time transitioning from recess back to learning, saving teachers valuable instructional time.

These results are possible for your students, too. Learn how Playworks can help you improve student-educator relationships, belonging, and attendance by signing up for a quick no-obligation conversation
